Functions

Main functions of the Directorate of Labour can be summarized as follows:

1. Promotion of settlement of industrial disputes, individual and collective grievances of the workers
2. Implementation/enforcement of various labour laws through periodic inspections
3. adjudication on payment of wages to the workers
4. adjudication on payment of compensation to the workers and their heirs
5. Registration of Trade Unions as the representative bodies of workers
6. Enforcement of Employment of Children Act, 1991 for regulating working conditions of working children and eradication of child labour
7. Fixation of minimum rates of wages for different categories of workers
8. Enforcement of international system of weights and measures
9. Collection, compilation and dissemination of labour statistics
10. Providing free legal aid to bonded laborers
11. Coordinating government efforts for eradication of child and bonded labour
12. Education of workers and employers on labour laws and contemporary issues
13. Assisting in formulation of different policies concerning working community
14. Implementation of Government policies concerning working community
15. Discharging role assigned to it in various tripartite bodies and conferences
16.     Realizing a reasonably handsome amount of government revenue in shape of different fees
